Welcome to the Architecture and Baukultur Initiative!

The Architecture and Baukultur Initiative was launched by the Federal Building Ministry in 2000 to stimulate and focus public discussion of the quality of planning and building in Germany.
The term Baukultur covers good planning and building and public discourse on this topic.

Baukultur can only thrive in a societal setting where a high level of attention is focused on the built environment and on the way in which it is created, reshaped and used. Such a perception of the concept of Baukultur is rooted in history and is based on the prestigious built environment heritage. Such a perception of the concept of Baukultur is firmly entrenched in the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs national urban development policy.

Baukultur relates to architecture, civil engineering, urban and regional planning, heritage conservation interests, landscape architecture, interior design and art for public buildings. It is integrated in the current spatial, infrastructure, social and economic context of towns, cities and cultural landscapes. This is the only way to produce valid contemporary accomplishments in the fields of architecture, civil engineering, landscaping, design of open spaces and heritage conservation. It includes planning and planning procedures, building, maintenance and recycling.

The culture of building manifests itself in the choice of appropriate procedures and in a process of integration that fuses socio-cultural, ecological, design, technical/functional and economic aspects of quality to form a balanced, sustainable overall quality. This is absolutely essential for the creation and preservation of vibrant towns and cities with a high quality of life.

The Federal Government’s Architecture and Baukultur Initiative brings together representatives of chambers and trade associations, organizations and cultural institutions. It is a network for their activities, as well as for the activities of the Federal Government, and provides a platform for the mutual exchange of ideas and experience.
